A clergyman who was imprisoned for his environmental protest has received criticism for boasting about his release.
Revd. Mark Coleman was sentenced to five weeks in prison for obstructing a road.
The 69-year-old supports the Just Stop Oil and Insulate Britain movements.
He boasted that he is already halfway through his sentence, while being held at Category B Thameside Prison in Woolwich, South London.
He said: “Massive thanks to all who sent messages. I loved the beautiful cards and encouraging words. Nearly halfway through my sentence at HMP Thameside.”
Alan Marsh expressed his anger: “Twice as long next time.”
Mark O’Keeffe said: “Not long enough for the lives you lot have put in danger.”
Richard Sheridan added: “Let’s hope it’s not too long before you are back inside.”
John Dennis said: “Pity it isn’t longer.”
Another commentator, Andrew, said: “Let’s hope next time it’s double the sentence.”
One called Tim said: “Reflect on your vanity, narcissism and the impact your actions have on the lives of the law abiding.”
Stephen Williams said: “Don’t do the crime if you don’t want the time.”
One person joked: “The Lord be with you, especially when you are bending down in the showers to pick up Mr Big’s soap.”
Coleman’s son Harvey tweeted his father’s message.
Earlier, Coleman had requested people to write to him to show support after he was found guilty of public nuisance in London Crown Court in April.
Coleman was jailed for his protest in the City of London in October 2020.
