A faded first edition copy of George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-Four is now on sale on eBay for £3,000. This dystopian social science fiction novel was published in 1949 and was Orwell’s ninth and final book completed in his lifetime. Throughout its publication history, it has been either banned or legally challenged as subversive or ideologically corrupting. In November 2019, the BBC named Nineteen Eighty-Four on its list of the 100 most influential novels.
A seller from Eccles, Gtr Mancs is offering readers a chance to get their hands on a first edition copy of this novel for £3,000 on the auction website. The product description states that the book is “Highly Collectible Rare George Orwell Hardback Novel ‘Nineteen Eighty Four’ First Edition First Print, London 1949.”
The book is in excellent condition throughout without any folds or markings, except for some discolouration of the exterior, which is commensurate with age. Eric Arthur Blair, known by his pen name George Orwell, was an English novelist, essayist, journalist and critic. His work is characterised by lucid prose, biting social criticism, total opposition to totalitarianism, and outspoken support of democratic socialism. Orwell produced literary criticism and poetry, fiction and polemical journalism.
His best-known work was Nineteen Eighty-Four, which was published in 1949. The Times ranked George Orwell second among “The 50 greatest British writers since 1945”. By 1984, Orwell’s novel “Nineteen Eighty Four” had been translated into 65 languages, more than any other novel in English at that time.
