OpenAI’s ChatGPT has taken the world by storm since launching in late 2022 and counts more than 100 million monthly users. Its breakthrough has kick-started an AI arms race between traditional IT giants like Microsoft and Google.
Musk is not new to artificial intelligence; he is one of the co-founders of OpenAI (the business that produced the seemingly ubiquitous AI chatbot, ChatGPT), and he gave $100 million to the project while it was still strictly a non-profit organisation.
Yet, he already manages a number of successful businesses, including Tesla, SpaceX, Twitter, The Boring Company, and Neuralink; therefore, it is unclear how he intends to fit yet another venture into his schedule.
Musk just signed an open letter warning about the hazards of artificial intelligence and requesting AI research organisations to suspend training of AIs for at least six months.
Musk has also accused OpenAI of programming its chatbot “to be politically correct.”
It has been less than a month since he called for a halt to training powerful artificial intelligence systems because they posed “deep hazards to society.” His commitment to establishing a similar service comes as a result of this.
ChatGPT is a so-called large language model, which means that it is trained on a massive quantity of data to comprehend text and respond to prompts in a manner that is similar to how a human would.
The technology that enables it recently underwent an upgrade known as GPT-4, which significantly improved the chatbot’s capacity to comprehend and carry out tasks.
Users have proved that it can be used to write poetry, fix computer bugs, and pass tests. Businesses like Microsoft and Expedia have integrated technology into their products to assist users with various tasks, including searching the Internet and booking vacations.
The Chinese government released a draught of new regulations last week, explaining how generative artificial intelligence services in China will likely be required to comply with the same stringent limitations as the rest of the internet in China.
In March, Italy made history by being the first country in the world to completely prohibit ChatGPT during an investigation by the country’s data protection authorities into how the service collects information about its users.
The European Union’s law enforcement body Europol has also warned that criminals and those spreading false information may utilise ChatGPT.
And the White House is also soliciting feedback from the general public on how artificial intelligence should be regulated in the United States. This comes after the White House unveiled its “blueprint for an AI bill of rights” towards the end of the previous year to safeguard employment and personal information.
When Will ‘Truth GPT’ Be Launched?
There have been rumours that Musk is still recruiting employees for his artificial intelligence startup.
Nevertheless, according to a business filing in the state of Nevada, he has already established a new company and given it the name X.AI Corp.
Musk is listed as the company’s director, while his adviser, Jared Birchall, is listed as the company’s secretary. The company was established on March 9th.
