A group of angry Brits has come to the defence of popular pub chain Wetherspoons, after it was mocked by an American stand-up comedian.
J.D. Witherspoon said he has received complaints from customers of the budget chain contacting him due to their similar names. To try and put an end to the confusion, he has added “Not the UK pub chain” to his Twitter bio.
The 23-year-old, whose full name is John David Witherspoon Jr., was criticised by loyal Wetherspoons fans for his comments.
During his stand-up routine, which he shared on TikTok, J.D. Witherspoon said: “There is a pub in the UK called J D Wetherspoon. So it’s the same name as mine, except it’s off by like one letter. So it’s an ‘e’ instead of an ‘I’.
“And they have like the worst fcking reviews ever. But they have no social media presence. They deleted that a sitty review number 208.”
Responding to the comedian’s remarks, Emma McKenzie said: “No way man we love Spoons.”
Another social media user added: “Wetherspoons isn’t just A pub, it’s the biggest chain in the UK. The vast majority are cheap low end pubs but deep down everyone loves them.”
A fourth added: “Spoons is awesome. You can get a pint for 99p.”
Other Wetherspoons fans mocked J.D. Witherspoon for underestimating the size of the chain, with one user saying: “A pub? There are 900.”
Another user echoed this, saying: “Over 900 pubs are part of Wetherspoons.”
Some social media users even messaged J.D. Witherspoon as if he were the pub chain. Bridget Jennison joked: “Hey man, why do you put your toilets two miles from the bar?” Another quipped: “Trying to find the toilets is like going on a quest to Mordor.”
J.D. Witherspoon is the son of late Friday series actor John Witherspoon, who died in 2019 at the age of 77. Wetherspoons has been approached for comment.
